Librarians can't keep up with bad AI

Popular Science

Technology AI Librarians can't keep up with bad AI From false sources to hallucinations, it's become a major problem. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Generative artificial intelligence continues to have a problem with hallucinations . Although many responses to user queries are largely accurate, programs like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot are still prone to offering made-up information and facts . As bad as that is on its own, the issue is further complicated by a tendency for these AI programs to produce seemingly reputable, yet wholly imaginary, sources. But as annoying as that is for millions of users, it's becoming a major issue for the people trusted to provide reliable, real information: librarians.

9 creative ways to use ChatGPT that are outside the box

PCWorld

ChatGPT is quite capable at considering both sides of an argument in a logical way, which makes it the perfect tool when you need a third party to mediate an argument--whether that argument is between you and someone else, or just one you're debating in your own head. As an example, I asked ChatGPT to help me look at both sides of the debate around investing more money in space travel. Some people see humanity reaching out to the stars as the best way forward, while others see it as a waste of money. ChatGPT looked at the pros and cons of each side and ended with a sensible set of conclusions. However, it did end up sitting on the fence a bit, so you may need to push it harder if you want a strong answer one way or the other.

How to use ChatGPT as a personal AI research assistant

Popular Science

ChatGPT continues to get more and more capable as features such as web search and scheduled tasks are added, and the latest new AI tool pushed out by OpenAI is an advanced searching feature called Deep Research--yes, just like the similar tool inside Google Gemini. As you can guess from the name, the tool is designed to do a thorough search on the web for information related to your query, then present a detailed report to your specifications. According to OpenAI, Deep Research "leverages reasoning to search, interpret, and analyze massive amounts of text, images, and PDFs on the internet, pivoting as needed in reaction to information it encounters". Right now, you need to be a paying ChatGPT user to access Deep Research, so you'll have to give OpenAI at least 20 per month to make use of it. To date, there's been no word on if or when the feature will make its way to users on the free ChatGPT tier.
